    Hepatitis B : Causes, Symptoms & Ayurvedic Management

    Hepatitis B is a viral infection (Hepatitis B virus) and  inflammation of the liver that influences over 40 million Indians yearly which might brings about Liver-cirrhosis, liver cancer, liver damage, liver failure and fatality.


    Incubation period of Hepatitis B virus -  30 -180 days.

    Causes of Hepatitis B


    Infection from  virus HBV.

    Certain kinds of liver diseases like Wilson’s disease, cystic fibrosis, hemochromatosis (An increased iron deposits in the liver).

    Liver damage due to excessive consumption of  alcoholic beverages.

    Excessive or unnecessary use of Certain medicinal drugs, such as acetaminophen.

    Sexually transmitted disease (STD) - Unprotected Sexual practice with multiple intimacy partners or practicing sexual act with an infected individual and homosexual activities in male beings, as well. 

    Sharing of contaminated or  infected needles (Blood transfusion,  drug needles, Tattooing, piercing of skin like nose, ears etc.), and razors, etc.

    Infected mother can transmit infections with their new-born baby or via breast milk.

    Prolonged and continuous close contact  with a chronic Hepatitis B patient.

    Dental procedure in a few patients.


    Symptoms of Hepatitis B



    Jaundice / Icterus -  Dark yellowish discolouration of skin, sclera, and urine, Clay shaded stools, and symptoms of anaemia.


    Lethargy, tiredness, fatigue, body ache, joint pain, etc.

    Loss of appetite.

    Fever.

    Nausea and / or vomiting.

    Dehydration of body.

    Pruritus.


    Diagnosis and laboratory tests



    Hepatitis virus serological assessments - 

    Australia Antigen (HBsAg) test -

    Hepatitis B Surface Antigen (HBsAg) is Positive if an individual is infectious with Hepatitis B virus / HBV infection.

    Hepatitis B envelope antigen (HBeAg) test -

    Additionally , it is  positive regarding Hepatitis B.

    Blood tests for SGPT, Bilirubin and alkaline phosphate - Increased.

     USG for whole abdomen.

    Liver function tests and  Liver biopsy test to checking out liver damage.

    Paracentesis in case there is Ascites.


    Complications of Hepatitis B



    Chronic Hepatitis.

    Cirrhosis of liver.

    Liver cancer - Hepato-carcinoma, Hepato-cellular malignancies.

    Liver failure (Hepatic failure).

    Hepatic - necrosis (Liver- necrosis).


    Diet restrictions, life style adjustment and modifications in Hepatitis B



    Avoid alcoholic beverages or other addictions to discover the best possible results.

    Liver-friendly diets like whole  cereal, whole grain, oatmeal, brown rice, bran, rye, whole wheat bread,  starchy vegetables (potato) should be entertained in the case of Hepatitis B.

    Stay away from certain medications like Acetaminophen, on account that can affect your liver. Always contact with a qualified physician before using any treatments.

    Wash the hands with cleaning soap and normal water before intaking and / or  preparing food, and after changing a diaper, or the usage of  toilet. Also clean all household utensils after use.

    Avoid sexual practicing with multiple love making partner.

    Always drink plenty of normal water (8-10 glass of water is preffered) and limit consumption of common salt or high sodium foods.

    Eat smaller meals and keep away from fast foods,Junk Foods, processed food items like chips, cookies, paw-bread, crackers, cheese, foods high in saturated fats,  red meats , canned soups, commercial sauces, poach, fried eggs, grill, full-cream milk, snacks, yoghurt, creamy cheese, biscuits, cakes, pies, tarts, chocolate, mayonnaise, avocado, fatty fish,  bacon, fatty gravies, white flour etc.

    Liver friendly fats like olive oil, flaxseed oil, canola oil, fish oils etc. are recommended for  Hepatitis B patients.

    Adequate bed rest should be taken by Hepatitis B affected patients to better recuperation and recovery.

    Consuming satisfactory proteinous ingredients may be beneficial in the case of Hepatitis B.

    Always consume fresh, organic, natural fruits and green vegetables and dairy products that are low-fat or fat-free.

    Do light physical exercise, for the reason that exercise can improve your appetite.

    Shodana chikitsa  - Panchkarma therapy should be adopted for detoxification or cleansing system.
