    Heat Stroke: Causes, Symptoms, Prevention & Treatment

    What is the heat stroke?

    Heat stroke is recognized as sunstroke and hyperthermia, occuring due to great exposure of high environmental heat. Heat stroke is an emergency and life-threatening condition where in fact the body's coolant system or temperature regulation mechanisms fails. A heat stroke can be fatal in unattended cases credited to progressing coma or vital organ damages. It always requires urgent and effective treatment.

    How long will it really take to recover from a heat stroke?

    Heat stroke is a common problem of summer months and initial recovery requires about 1-2 days in general cases and 2 - 12 months in the conditions of damaged organ (brain, liver, kidney, lungs etc.)

    Causes & Risk factors of Heat Stroke?

    Age - children up to 10 years, and adults over 60.

    Pregnancy.

    Less consumption of water.

    Wearing excess, unnecessary and/or tight garments or synthetic clothes.

    Dehydration - due to  increased urination, and excessive sweating.

    Allopathic prescriptions - Sedatives, anti-convulsants, tranquilizers, anti-hypertensives, vasoconstrictors, diuretics, antipsychotic drugs etc.

    Health conditions - Obesity, underweight, diabetes, hypertension, kidney diseases, cardiac disorders, mental sickness, alcoholism etc.

    Prolonged contact with high temperatures and Sunburn.

    Strenuous exercises, playing games for a lot longer or labourious works in summer months.

    Signs and symptoms of Heat stroke

    High body's temperature -  104 F  - 105 F

    Profuse sweating / Heavy perspiration. 

    Severe dehydration due to excessive sweating. 

    Throbbing headache, giddiness, nausea and vomiting

    Fatigue, exhaution, tiredness, lethargy, and great weakness

    Weak, or rapid pulse and low blood pressure.

    Rapid breathing and increased heart rate.

    Diminished urination and shortness of breath.

    Muscle cramps, and abdominal cramps.

    Dried out hot skin or redness of skin - due to absence of sweating in some of cases.

    Bizarre behavioral changes (mental status changes) - Strange behavior, disorientation, irritability, agitation etc.

    Delusions, hallucinations, confusion,  light headedness, unconsciousness,  faintness, seizures and misunderstandings.

    Organ damage, coma, and death may occurs in uncontrolled cases.

    What exactly are the Complications Of Heat Stroke?

    Internal organ damage such as kidney failure, cardiac failure.

    Seizures and coma.

    Permanent damage of the brain.

    Miscarriage.

    Death.

    How do I Prevent Heat Stroke?

    Tips and Precautions For Heat Stroke -

    Limit certain medications (sedatives, anti-convulsants, diuretics, antipsychotic etc.), contact with your doctor before utilizing them.

    Usually do not stepping out in sunlit areas, if necessary, always make use of umbrella, hat or dark eye-glasses when moving outdoor in summer months.

    Take sufficient sleep at night time and eat a well balanced healthy diet.

    Wear loose-fitting, light colored and cotton garments only in summer season.

    Limit exposure to heat or sun.

    Drink a lot of normal water, coconut water, buttermilk, lassi, lemonade and organic fruits juices to keep your body hydrated.

    Avoid strenuous activities like laborious works, playing games for a long time, and heavy excercises or workouts in summer months.

    What's the First Aid Treatment for Heat Stroke?

    Follow this simple first aid managements till hospital admission of the patient -

    Make the person lay down in a cool or air-conditioned place, remove all unnecessary clothes and start spraying cold water all over body. Or cover the patient with the wet sheet and you can place ice packs to the soles, palms, forehead, back of the neck, groin, armpits etc. Apart from this, do switch on of the fan, air-cooler or air-conditioner.

    Additionally you can give a cold bath or  cold water immersion for heat stroked person to lessen the body temperature.

    Check the rectal temperature rather than oral to accurate measurement.

    Try not to give any anti-pyretic drugs without recommendation of doctor.

    Try to rehydrate the patient by giving fluids, ORS, fruit juices, lemonade, glucose water, coconut water etc.

    For therapeutic purposes, onion juice has been utilized by common folk or Ayurvedic practitioners regarding heat stroke for a long stretch.

    Tamarind water drink - Make a decoction of tamarind pulp in boiling water and drink it as it can reduce body's temperature.

    Prepare Aam Panna of raw mangoes and cooling spices and drink it 2 - 3 times daily.
    Plums are possessing cooling characteristics, so soak and mash some plums in water. Now drink it after straining. As it is an old age therapy for a heat stroke.

    Apply sandalwood paste on forehead, chest, neck and back side, as it is an advantageous natural medicine to deal with high body's temperature concerned to heat stroke because of its cooling nature.

    Coriander leaf juice is another home remedy that has a cooling character and able to bring down the 
    body temperature.

    Mint Leaves - Make juice of mint leaves and drink because it possess cooling influence on the body and competent to reducing of high temperature of the body and treats heat stroke concerned nausea and vomiting.

    Diet regimen and Lifestyle practices

    Foods to avoid to Prevent Heat stroke - Do not eat fried foods, meat, hot spices like garlic, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, chilies, horseradish, raw onion, radish etc.
    Avoid alcoholic drinks like wine, beer, whisky etc. and caffeinated beverages like tea and coffee.

    What things to Eat in summer months - Green leafy vegetables, possessing cooling characteristics like cucumber, celery, peas,  zucchini, carrots, asparagus, beans, cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage, kale, beets, lettuce, artichoke etc.
    Cooling fruits - water melon, musk melon, apples, pomegranates, blueberries, cranberries, grapes, grapefruits, orange, lemon, papaya, pineapple, banana, coconut, mango etc.
