    Introduction - Irritable Bowel Syndrome(IBS) / Grahani or Sangrahani


    Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a functional gastrointestinal tract and

    digestive disorder that influences the digestive tract especially large 

    intestine. IBS also known as spastic colon or spastic colitis and it typically 



    does not harm your body organs or lead to disease.

    Among diseases of GI tract IBS generally seems in every day follow, 

    that plagues many of us across the world. Irritable bowel syndrome, 

    which incorporates both constipation and diarrhoea. 

    Bowels habit is changed by diarrhea or constipation developing 

    alone or alternating. 

    Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) influences 10 - 12 % of the world’s 

    population and  more common in women than men (it affects about 10 - 

    12% of the men and rest 60 - 70% are women) medical research and 

    analysis has coupled it to stress and worry but up to now the exact 

    reason behind the condition is unknown.


    Classification of IBS


     IBS   A  -  alternating diarrhea with constipation.

     IBS   C  -  with constipation.

    IBS    D -   here diarrhea is predominant sign and symptom.

    Causes of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)


    Toxins accumulating in tissues and blocking blood circulation.

    Poor nourishment and digestion.

    Imbalance of the nervous system, mental stress, anxiety, nervousness, 

    grief, anger, fear, depression etc.

    Lowering of natural level of resistance and immunity.

    Infectious diarrhoea - Parasites may be a cause like Giardiasis.

    Improper food - excessive and unnecessary fasting or heavy food, 

    frigid food, dry, processed and junk food intake, eating before the


    digestion of recently taken food.

    Improper purgation.

    Improper sleeping - keeping yourself awake during the night time 

    and sleeping throughout the day.

    Excessive consumption of alcohol, caffeine, coffee, tea or carbonated

    Fresh fruits and vegetables as well as fruit juices should be consumed 

    to reduce the amount of inflammation in the lining of the stomach.

    Food and changes in lifestyle - specific to the individual’s constitution, 

    nature of work and physical conditions.

    Avoid use of caffeine, alcoholic beverages, liquor, coffee, cola, 

    and carbonated drinks.

    Avoid consumption of unsuitable food, heavy, cold - frigid, contaminated

    or too sweet food, which is heavy to process.

    Avoid high-gaseous food. In the event that you have problems with 

    bloating and gas, you might find relief by minimizing or staying away from 


    high-gas formating foods like salad and raw fruits, beans, cabbage and 

    citric fruits, milk products, chocolate, cabbage, red peppers, green 

    onions etc.

    Tobacco should be eliminated completely. Avoid all kinds of tobacco, 

    including smoking, chewing or snuffing.

    Reduce your anxiety and stress by modifying your life style.

    Take fiber rich diet in case there is constipation.

    Don’t suppress the natural urge of urine & stool.

    Have soluble fibre, and foods like beans, oatmeal, apples, 

    strawberries and grapes. 

    Dietary fibres content is incredibly helpful to alleviate symptoms. 

    Increase fibers slowly but surely. 


    Quickly adding dietary fiber to your daily diet may cause gas and lead 

    to other symptoms, so increase intake slowly by 3 - 4 grams per day to 

    reduce the risk.


    Eat smaller meals and not three massive meals every day.

    Increase your liquid intake - especially drink plenty of water, fruit 

    or vegetable juice, derived from carrot, spinach, beet and cucumber.

    Try peppermint oil. Enteric-coated peppermint oil capsules may help 

    reduce symptoms like abdominal pain, bloating and gas.

    Avoid NSAIDs (Non-steroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs/ pain- killers) 

    as these may get aggravate symptoms of IBS.

    Eat old rice, jwar, coriander leaves, lentil, green grams soup, black 

    pepper, dried ginger, apple, pomegranate, nutmeg, skimmed milk, 

    buttermilk, hot water etc.

    Complete rest - enough, adequate and satisfactory sleep.

    Day sleep, rousing throughout the night, tension, suppression of 

    natural urges must be better avoided.

    Take one teaspoon of Isabgol / Psyllium husks with half glass of fresh 

    yogurt 1 hour after dinner.

    Avoid alcoholic beverages, liquor and stop smoking.

    Buttermilk is specifically recommended in this disease.

    Take effective steps to regulate and manage your stress via Yoga, 

    Asanas, Pranayama, Meditation, Light and moderate exercise, Proper 

    sleep, Music, visualization, and other alternative profound relaxation

    techniques.

    Average physical activities like walking, jogging etc.
