    Use Ayurveda to Treat and Prevent Headaches

    What is a Headache?

    A headache is a symptom rather than disease, known as cephalgia in medical term and the word headache identifies pain anywhere in the region of the head. Headache is one of the most frequent medical condition and  can be extremely uncomfortable and irritationg for just about any one.  At one time or another, most people have problem with headaches. When expriencing headache, most people grab allopathic analgesics drugs like Aspirin, paracitamol, Ibuprofen etc. Furthermore, these allopathic pain killers are simply a short-term solution. Headache can be mild, moderate or severe pain that affects the whole head region.

    Causes of Cephalgia (Headache)

    Improper diet and lifestyle.

    Hypertension / high blood pressure.

    Sinusitis.

    Listening to loud music and Reading in dim light.

    Tension, Emotional strain, Mental stress.

    Overwork.

    Abdominal diseases like  Constipation , Indigestion, Acidity etc.

    Insomnia/ Improper sleep/Sleeplessness.

    Epistaxis / bleeding from the nose.

    Dizziness.

    Hunger.

    Photophobia- increased sensitivity to light and sound.

    Irregular menstrual periods and menopause.

    Excess consumption of Alcoholic beverage and liquor.

    Use of birth control pills.

     Fever.

    Nervous weakness.

    Anemia and general debility.

    Oxygen depletion in the blood.

    Watching TV for a long time and excessive use of  computer.

    Toxicity in the body.

    Ear problems - ear infection, tinnitus etc.

    Eye problems - weak eye-sight.

    Allergies with certain substances.

    Over exposure to cold temperatures.

    Neck tension.

    Staying up late at night.

    Exposure to environmental noise and noxious fumes or chemicals.

    Symptoms of Headache

    Pain in the head, back of the neck and shoulders.

    Nausea and vomiting.

    Insomnia - difficulty in sleeping.

    Loss of appetite.

    Restlessness - feeling of uneasiness.

    Diet & Proper Lifestyle advice, Daily Routine and Home Remedies

    Have fresh, warm and easily digestible foods, boiled vegetables, buttermilk, salads, dairy products like butter milk, milk etc. boiled rice, soups, vegetable juices, brown rice and whole-wheat flour. 

    Vegetable juices and soup, fruits like apple, mango, papayas, grapes, pears and fruit juices should be studied in sufficient volumes.

    Avoid fried, refined, fridged, sour, spicy foods, meat, and chocolate.

    Cleansing the body of toxins is needful in some selected cases.

    Also, 25 - 50 gms. ground nut, walnut and raisins can be eaten each day.

    Make a habit of rising early on and make a regular head-massage before bath.

    You can treat tension related headache with Chamomile tea.

    Yoga -  meditation - light exercises - pranayamas are definitely tend to be  beneficial.

    Use  essential oils such as lavender oil, sandalwood oil, jatamamsi oil, or peppermint oil for a good outcomes.
    Put 1 - 2 drops of Eucalyptus oil in warm water, and inhale the vapour to clear sinuses.

    Avoid doing work for long hours continuously.

    Make sure that you are getting adequate sleep and always make an effort to use a dark room.

    Drink a lot of liquid like normal water, juice, soup etc. and stay hydrated.

    Avoid tea and coffee.

    Avoid overexposure to cold or hot weather.

    Sandal wood paste can be a helpful management of headache.

    Menthol containing pain balm is another solution of headache.

    Apply a hot or cold compress to your forehead to get instant relief from headache.

    The natural urges like bowel motions, urination, sneezing, hunger, thirst, sleep etc. should not be suppressed.

    Stay away  from anxiety, anger, nervousness, mental tension, and worry.

    Herbs used in Headache

    Dhanyak - Coriander - Coriandrum sativum.

    Caraway seeds  - Carum carvi.

    Nimboo - Lemon - Citrus limon.

    Paan - Betel - Piper betel.

    Almonds - Prunus dulcis / Prunus amygdalus.

    Dalchini - Cinnamon - Cinnamomum verum.

    Thyme  - Thymus vulgaris.

    Ajwain - Bishop’s weed - Ammi Trachyspermum.

    Lavang - Cloves - Syzygium aromaticum.

    Mehandi - Henna - Lawsonia inermis.

    Apple - Malus pumila / Malus domestica.

    Brahmi - Waterhyssop - Bacopa monnieri.


    Shankhpushpi - Convolvulus Pluricaulis.

    Green tea - Camellia sinensis.

    Jatamamsi oil - Spikenard - Nardostachys Jatamansi.

    Peppermint oil - Mentha Piperita.

    Lavender oil - Lavandula Officinalis.

    An useful composition for headache  -

    Black pepper 8 - 10 grains.

    Cinnamon 5 gms.

    Clove 5 pieces.

    Almond 5 grains.

    Sandal wood powder 1 tablespoonful.

    Rose water as required.

    Collect all above mentioned ingredients and make a paste after grind them well and apply this paste on the affected area for 20 - 25 minutes to get instant relief.
